Chapter 5
Evelyn’s Pov
I wanted to run away, everything was suddenly becoming too scary, just like a scene from a horror movie. I had no wolf, meaning there was no way I can be able to protect myself if something attacked me here.
The alpha forbids me from taking self-defense lessons, and made sure I focused on performing my tasks alone. I looked away for anything, until my eyes fell on a stick on the floor.
Without another thought, I picked it up and kept it protectively before me. I began to take slow steps backwards, my eyes moving speedily from side to side, as I tried to get a clear image of who the intruder was.
“What a wonderful weapon you have there.” A voice suddenly said behind me.
I shouted from shock and then quickly turned to face the intruder, but I lost my footing and collapsed almost into the trash. When I saw who it was, anger began to build up.
“What do you think you are doing sneaking up on me like that?” I was beyond enraged, but he kept smiling.
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you.” His voice was playful, and that only annoyed me the more.
I recognized his face, he was the one Alpha Damon had called Dylan last night, and getting a closer look at him, I felt irritation build up in me.
I stood up and dusted off my clothing, “So you are stalking me now?” I was still having an aftershock from the shock I had just gotten.
The anger flowing inside me was palpable. But the damned guy just rolled his eyes at that.
“Stalking you, Oh, please.” He rolled his eyes, as he pushed a strand of his hair to the back. I couldn’t help but notice how strangely long his hair was. Most shifters preferred to keep their hair low, Lucien had said it made them feel uncomfortable when transforming. Not that I would know anyway, I haven’t even experienced what it felt like before.
“I was just checking up on you. It seems you have a lot of people who are crazy about you, and I don’t want to get to hear that your body is dangling from a tree this time around, especially with that stick as the only defense you have.” His smile remained, but the mockery in his words got to me fast.
I wanted to lash out at him, and scratch his face with my nails. But in the end, I took a deep breath and turned to leave.
“Yeah, very funny.”
He shrugged. “Well, since you are the Alpha’s Luna now, I guess its my duty to protect you too, so……”
I froze, a frown immediately replacing my forced calm exterior I had momentarily masked my face with.
“Did he tell you that?” I asked, turning back to look at him. I was sure my eyes showed just how furious I was.
He shrugged, but he didn’t answer the question.
I exhaled. “Guess I have to point that out to you. I am no one’s anything, and definitely not your alpha's, so you can go look after the next Luna candidate. Thank you.”
I know I was being extreme, but that was just how I felt. Who knows how many other people he had already started telling I am his Luna? Was he that determined to make life this difficult for me?
He chuckled suddenly, in a very cynical way that only deepened my frown. But just as quickly as the laugh came, his face suddenly went cold.
He took a step towards me, and it took everything in me not to take 2 steps back when he was looking at me like that. I met his gaze coldly, until he spoke.
“You are right, I also do not have all the time in my plate. I came here for a totally different reason, and suddenly I have a new task and a new person to look after, that is not exactly my definition of fun. I don’t have the time to prioritize your wellbeing over my own important tasks.” He sighed, rubbing his temples lightly. “But I guess someone has to do that anyway, since you are incapable.”
Pain clutched my chest as soon as he said those words. I looked up at him, my eyes blinking twice as his words hit me hard. He didn’t like me, I was certain from the way he said those words. I couldn’t figure out why, but I just had the nudge that it must be for the same reason everyone here detested me.
From the day I moved into this pack, no one was willing to talk to me, and they all looked at me with disdain. At first, I thought it was because I had no wolf, but after seeing a lot of other moonless people fit in quite well here, I began to wonder if I was the problem. That was probably why I clung to Seth and fell in love with him; he was the only one who made me feel less weird at that time. Unfortunately, it was just………….
I sighed and turned away to hide the hurt. I cleared my throat and then looked back at him. “Alright, now we’ve established that, I can assure you that I have the capacity to protect myself. I have been alright even before you and your……… Alpha came here.” With that, I turned away, picking up the trash can I had dropped and began heading back to the Pack Hall, but my attempts to evade him was fruitless.
He caught up with me almost immediately and he quickly blocked my path. “I’m sorry for speaking to you like that.” He suddenly said and my steps faltered.
When he saw, I wasn’t going to respond, he continued, “My name is Dylan by the way. What’s your name?” He asked calmly, the coldness in his voice gone.
I didn’t want to respond, but my lips moved on their own accord. “Evelyn.” I said and continued walking.
He caught up with me again, “You have a pretty old name, I would have expected something more stylish……….”
I shot him a glare. What in goddess name was wrong with this guy?
“Have anyone ever told you that you are very infuriating?” I was irritated, and I made sure he knew that.
He grinned. “Yeah, I get that a lot. But what can I do, I was born that way.” He replied, more arrogantly than normal.
“I'm the Alpha’s Beta, in case you're wondering. I'm not his son. He's never had a wife, mate or mistress.” He said in one go, I could hear the amusement in his voice as he said this, as though he was having the best time of his life taunting me like this.
I rolled my eyes at that and continued walking. “I’m pretty sure no one asked you.” I said snidely. But deep down, I felt a wave or relief wash through me. So, he hasn’t been mated before? That’s strange for someone of his status and good features.
