Chapter 4
~ Savannahâs POV ~
Mate! Mate! â my wolf screams.
Calm down, me-wolf! â I scream back internally.
This feels like it! This feels like mate! I swear! â my wolf yells back.
This guy canât be our mate! You donât know what youâre talking about, shut up!
Logan seems to notice that my body stiffens at his touch, and his eyes darken as he looks at me. I immediately feel intimidated, so I pull my hand away briskly.
Yes, intimidated, but also⌠excited?
âLooks like youâre gonna need this if youâre gonna run out somewhere,â Logan bends down to pick up one of my heels and he hands it over to me.
âI-Iâm not running off anywhere,â I say, grabbing the shoe back.
I put the shoe back on my foot and look around the floor for the other half. And thatâs when I notice Harlan kneeling down in front of me. He has the shoe in his hand, like Prince Charming to Cinderella.
Oh, sweet pineapples. This guy is smooth!
I try my best to look calm as I slip my foot into the shoe. His finger grazes my skin ever so slightly, but itâs enough to send shivers up my body.
Is that electricity I just felt?
âThank you,â I say politely as Harlan stands back up.
âPsh,â Logan scoffed. âWhat a move,â
Harlan glares at his brother, and Logan just laughs.
âAnyway, Iâm sorry weâre late to the party,â Harlan coughs to ease the tension, âWe just came from down south, we had some business to attend to,â
âStop talking about business, already. Weâre at a party, youâre gonna bore the pretty girl to death,â Logan groans jokingly.
âLogan,â Harlan scolds.
âWhat? Itâs true,â
Harlan shakes his head and sighs. He turns his attention back to me and says, âPlease forgive my older brother, heâs known to be a little bit... crass,â
Logan scoffs mockingly and says, âPlease forgive my little brother, heâs an ass,â
The two brothers exchange a look like they want to punch each other in the face. And somehow, I find the situation amusing. These two grown men are bickering in front of me like a bunch of kindergarteners. A smile creeps up my lips and I let out a small giggle.
âLook at that, she thinks weâre funny,â Logan comments, and I put a hand to cover her mouth, stopping myself.
âPlease, laugh away. My brother is ridiculous,â Harlan nods at me and Logan glares at him.
âMiss Savannah, there you are. Iâve been looking everywhere,â Kathy pops up suddenly, causing the three of us to turn around. âAlpha Hanson and his family from the Black Onyx Pack have arrived and theyâre looking forward to meeting you,â
âIâll be right there, Kathy,â I nod at the maid and she quickly scurries off. Something about the way the Kaiser brothers are staring at her is frightening her.
âYou invited the Carsons? Man, theyâre a bunch of jackasses,â Logan sneers.
âDammit, Logan! You and your mouth. Why did I bring you here again?â Harlan sighs in exasperation, then he turns to me and says âAnd this is him sober. Imagine him drunk,â
âIâm a lot more fun when Iâm drunk, trust me,â Logan links an arm around his brotherâs neck and Harlan gives him a bored stare.
âSo, uhâŚâ I speak up timidly, âI guess I should take you to the party. Follow me,â
Turning to my heels, I lead the guys toward the dining room. There goes my plan of escaping, I sigh to myself. And as Iâm making my way back, I canât help but feel like Iâm being watched. The Kaiser brothers have their gaze on my back the entire time and itâs making me somewhat uncomfortable.
Are they looking at my ass?
Not wanting to entertain that thought, I turn around instinctively and say, âSo, here we are, please help yourselves to some dinner and champagne,â
I was about to leave them before they can say anything else, but suddenly, Logan stands in my way, stopping me. âAnd where are you going?â he asks.
ââŚTo greet the other guests,â
âBut we are your guests,â he argues.
I canât help but gulp. Logan is very forward and Iâm not used to that kind of treatment.
âLogan, why are you giving her such a hard time?â Harlan scolds his brother.
âIâm not, Iâm actually doing you a favor,â Logan doesnât take his eyes off of me.
âWhat favor?â I ask.
âIf youâre talking to us, you donât have to talk to all these other people,â Logan gestures to the sea of guys waiting to talk to her next. âIâm saving you from a whole bunch of boring ass conversations,â
As much as I hate to admit it, the man is right. Looking around the room, I can see all these guys that are eyeing me like a pariah. None of them dare to come near me though, at least not now that they see me talking to the Kaiser brothers. They probably rather wait than interject.
I think itâs important to mention that there is something frightening about the way the brothers stare down at everyone in the room. None of them dare to look back. And weâre talking about a room full of Alphas here.
âWell, thank you, I guess. Youâre like a modern day knight in shining armor,â I stifle a laugh. I meant to say it sarcastically, but Logan isnât fazed.
He cocks his head to the side and smirks sinisterly, saying, âHm, youâre feisty. I like you,â
I do not expect that at all. Something about the way he says it, my heart flatlines for a beat. Quickly, I throw my gaze away to keep my composure, hoping he didnât see my cheeks blushing bright pink.
âSo, uh, can I get you guys anything to drink?â I mutter, changing the subject.
âWeâre fine, thank you,â Harlan replies, smiling that megawatt smile.
What is in that smile? He just looks so captivating.
âHey, Harlan, doesnât this party seem a little bit off to you?â Logan says to his brother.
âWhat do you mean?â
âI mean, where are all the girls?â
âYou didnât read the invite, did you?â Harlan asks back.
âThat what I have you for,â
Harlan shakes his head and answers, âLogan, this is pretty much Savannahâs coming out party into high society. Sheâs here to be introduced to⌠her suitors,â
âOh, so theyâre auctioning you off?â Logan turns to me. Totally unapologetic.
âLogan,â Harlan hisses, worried that I might be offended.
âDonât worry, heâs right,â I admit, âI am the auctioned horse,â
I take another look around the room and shake my head in disbelief. I find my fatherâs methods to be absolutely degrading and humiliating. But I am powerless compared to him, the almighty Alpha William Wilcox. So, whatâs a girl in my position to do? Nothing. Absolutely nothing.
âSo, any of these gentlemen here caught your eye?â Harlan asks as he follows my stare.
I shake my head in response. âNone of them,â
âWell, you have better taste than I thought,â Logan interjects.
âLook at you talking about taste,â Harlan scoffs mockingly before turning to me, whispering, âThis oneâs sleeping with everything and everyone that walks,â
âHey, itâs not my fault they canât get enough,â Logan laughs playfully. âAnd says the guy whoâs dating the Betaâs daughter for five years but has no intention of marrying her. If weâre airing out dirty laundry here, I gotta say, I think youâre the one whoâs playing dirty, not me,â
âAlright, thatâs enough,â Harlan shuts him down.
âI mean, sure, the girl looks like a Victoriaâs Secret model, but why string the poor girl along?â Logan continues shamelessly, completely unfazed. âI donât know whatâs worse, you for stringing her along, or her for believing in all your bullshit,â
âStop it. Stop talking about Tessa like that,â Harlan says sternly.
âWhatever, lover boy,â Logan taunts. âAt least Iâm playing fair,â
As the two brothers glare at each other, Iâm taking note of this conversation. There are a lot of things to be learned from this exchange. So far, I know that Harlan is dating a Victoriaâs Secret Model girl, their Betaâs daughter, named Tessa, and Logan is just an absolute player.
âHow about you? Are you more into quality or quantity?â Logan turns to me suddenly, breaking off my train of thought.
âA what?â I gape.
But before the brothers can answer, a skinny guy with jet black hair and glasses approaches the three of us. He is a nervous wreck. Heâs been wanting to talk to me all night long, but he never gets a chance to. I was always surrounded by other guys, so he probably thinks that this is his last chance. Itâs now or never.
âH-hi, Savannah? My nameâs Steven Jones, from the Gold Sun PackâŚâ his voice is shaky as he lends out his hand, âI was hoping we can get a chance to talkâŚâ
This guy looks young and most likely new to this scene because he didnât realize he was interrupting the Kaiser brothers. Had he known, maybe he wouldnât have done that.
âSheâs talking to us, dumbass, are you blind?â Logan growls, stepping right in between me and poor Steven. Soon enough, Harlan steps in too.
Logan and Harlan stand tall, strategically covering me from any unwanted attention from outside our little circle. Logan glares menacingly at Steven and Harlan cocks his head to the side, waiting for Steven to make a move.
âWell⌠I just⌠Iâm sorry,â Steven stammers.
âGo be sorry somewhere else,â Harlanâs voice drops an octave lower than usual. Even I got scared of him.
ââŚS, sorry,â Steven backs away quickly. Within seconds, he is already out of sight, scurrying away like a little pup.
Aw, poor guy. But dang, that was handy.
The brothers then turn back around to face me. Logan throws another glare at the sea of guys as if it is a warning not to come anywhere near.
âCan I ask you two a question?â I ask.
âShoot,â Harlan replies.
âYou already have a girlfriend,â I say to Harlan, âAnd I donât think youâre interested in any kind of commitment, especially marriage,â I say to Logan. âSo, why are you two here?â
The brothers exchange a look. Harlan then turns to me and says, âI hope this doesnât offend you, but weâre only here on our parentâs order,â
âAnd what makes you think I have no interest in marrying you?â Logan interjects, raising his eyebrow challengingly.
âOh, I donât know, all that talk about playing fair and quantity?â I say with a bored stare. âAnd the first thing you said when you got here was, âwhere are all the girlsâ,â I add, mimicking him mockingly.
âWell, shit,â Logan stifles a laugh. âYouâre a fucking genius, arenât you?â
âHonestly, youâre just incredibly easy to read,â I retort back.
âWoah, nice one,â Harlan beams and puts his hands up to high five me. Smiling together, I high five him in response. Meanwhile, Logan rolls his eyes in annoyance.
Huh. This is kinda fun.
Iâm starting to feel a lot more relaxed around the Kaiser brothers now, theyâre not as intimidating as I thought theyâd be. And who knows, maybe we can actually be friends?
âOkay, now I really like you,â Logan says tauntingly.
âWhatever,â I roll my eyes and laugh.
For the next few minutes, I find myself enjoying the company of the Kaiser brothers. It doesnât seem like the brothers are going anywhere, so some of the guests even decide to go home because they know they probably wonât get a chance to talk to me after this.
âHey, can I be totally honest with you?â Logan says suddenly.
âLike you havenât been already?â I reply.
âHa,â he laughs. âNo offense, princess, youâre a lot of fun, but your party kinda sucks,â
âI know. Trust me, I donât wanna be here either,â I shrug.
âWell, is there somewhere else we can go?â Harlan asks.
âYeah, letâs get outta here,â Logan agrees.
âLike, where?â I look at them in confusion.
âOut there maybe?â Logan nods toward the woods.
The three of us turn our heads to the big window overlooking the woods. We do have a big backyard connected to our home, and thereâs also a beautiful lake in the middle of the woods. Itâs a great place to hunt or to clear oneâs head. I actually havenât been there in a while. Iâm not allowed to venture too deep into the woods on my own without any other guards.
âAre you talking about the lake?â I ask them.
The two brothers donât answer me in words, but their gorgeous smiles give it away.
