Chapter 6: What's All The Commotion?!

Alpha Roland's POV:

I made sure to take note of what was going on before the Matron, who was standing in the room, responded. I looked down at the servant girl at my feet, and she slightly looked up at me, noticing who I was, and then looked right back at the floor and trembled in fear. She was right to be afraid of my presence. Servants were not allowed to ever look at the Alpha in the eye, and upon her seeing who I was, she ensured to keep her gaze by looking down at once and not to gaze upon my face again.

"I'm so sorry, Alpha," the Matron spoke up at once in trying to gain my attention away from the servant girl beside the broken chair. “The servant was being clumsy and knocked over the chair, causing it to break. I will take care of this for you, personally."

'Do you think the servant would be that foolish?' (Rex questioned before he added his next comment.) 'You would think they would know better not to cross you by now.'

'I'm not sure, but I don't have time to get to the bottom of this right now. His Highness is coming, and that is my main concern I need to focus on before I have to deal with Him.' (I responded in return.)

I wasn't exactly sure about her response or whether it was the truth or not. As far as the servants were concerned, they knew they would be severely punished if they broke anything in the pack house. They didn't make enough to pay for its proper mending and would indeed receive a punishment accordingly. However, I had too much on my mind at the moment to bother and intervene in this minuscule matter, although I wouldn't have minded involving myself in this particular matter.

This particular servant seemed like they could use some good treatment since it was 'my chair' that was lying there broken on the floor. Despite that being a fact, the last thing I wanted to do would be to take this matter, in particular, into my own hands when I had other things that were more important at that current time. I made sure to make a statement to that exact effect that the matron was to deal with this promptly so that I did not have to.

"Get this issue taken care of before I do," I said aloud as I took another step forward in that moment.

"Promptly, Alpha," Mother responded to his words, waiting for him to leave. Once he was out of sight, she turned her fury to me and exclaimed, "I am not dealing with this today of all days!"

When I made my last statement, I ensured a low growl was emitted from my voice to convey the intensity of the matter at stake. Then I gave a description of why I was not going to partake in the punishment on behalf of the servant. I would've loved to partake in a treatment of a servant again, but I wanted to ensure she knew what was at stake here today. Most servants were not privy to certain conversations, nor were they told whether someone would come to our pack house. I wanted the servant girl to understand the mistake she had made and the reason for her punishment, which I was sure was to come not long after my departure.

"His Highness is coming today, and I do not want anything out of place," I said as I looked down at her once more, before looking back up at Matron standing not too far away from her.

"Promptly, Alpha," the matron said in response as she bowed before I turned around to head out of the room and toward my study until it was indeed time for breakfast.

As I headed out of the dining hall, I made sure to continue back down the corridor. As far as I could tell, I didn't hear any other disruptions, so I decided to head up the staircase at the end of the corridor, which led to the upper offices and straight to my study. When I reached the door to my study, I opened it, walked inside, and closed it behind me quickly and quietly. I was looking forward to a moment of peace and quiet, all before I had to head out to do my routine business for the day.

When I was ready, I headed straight for my desk without any further interruptions. I'm pleased to say that I finally managed to sit down at my desk and grab a folder lying there in the center of the top. I assumed it was placed there by one of the rather unfortunate servants who ignored the fact that I do not like files placed in the center of my desk. Even my Beta knew that files were to be placed in a section on the side, not in the center.

I had a specific order for how things were to proceed in my study. The servants, on the one hand, did not seem to pay attention to that fact, and that really got under my skin. That is yet another reason why I don't mind taking part in the servants 'treatments' from time to time. However, be that as it may, I opened up the file and proceeded to read the documents that were found inside. Before I knew it, I was lost in my own thoughts as I viewed the documents before me.

It was not all that uncommon to hear an occasional growl and rumble roaming through the halls of this old, timeworn castle. However, that was when I felt something that was a bit more powerful than the usual growl roaming through the various halls and corridors of this old place. This particular rumble felt like it shook the entire castle walls themselves. It seemed as if it had originated from down deep within the depths of the dungeon.

I was not exactly sure what it was or who could have caused it. However, when I heard it a second time, it made me rise to my feet in anticipation of something or someone who might burst through the door. I stood there, waiting, and yet still, nothing happened. What's going on? Where did that come from? Who could've caused such a rumble? Then I thought about it for another moment. That was not a common growl.

'Do you really think the pack could be rough-housing in the dungeon again? Usually, it's later in the day.' (Rex asked, confused.)

This is not exactly what I expected on the day the Alpha King was supposed to show up. Here I am, trying to get ready for the business meeting to take place later on. Now, I'm having to investigate some random quarrel in the dungeon. Only when I get there, they will not like what I have to say about that. Someone's going to pay for this mistake, but who?

'I'm not exactly sure. They are noisy at times, but this. This is a bit extreme for random rough-housing.' (I finally responded in return.)

I decided to go to the door and open it to listen. I stayed still a moment and listened intently to see if I could tell if anything was out of place. However, I didn’t hear anything at first, so I continued to stand there listening intently for a few more moments. That’s when I heard something that I did not expect. I nearly slammed the door closed on the side of my head as I couldn't back up fact enough. What made that sound? Wait, it was too early for His Highness to arrive, or so I thought.
